IMF Executive Director, President discuss Sri Lanka's role in Asian region

[July 31, 2014]

The Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) representing Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh and Bhutan, Dr. Rakesh Mohan called on President Mahinda Rajapaksa Wednesday at Temple Trees.

Commenting on the Government's initiatives toward rapid infrastructure development, Dr. Mohan said that it was a very wise decision to put in place development plans that focus on the medium and long term and not just the short term. Dr. Mohan said he was delighted to see that because it is very seldom that countries implement such long-term strategies.

President Rajapaksa said that the long-term, sustainable development of the country was always his priority when devising development initiatives for Sri Lanka.

MEA responds to US Embassy statement

The attention of the Ministry of External Affairs has been drawn to a media statement issued by the US Embassy on 28th July expressing concerns on media freedom in Sri Lanka. The statement refers to incidents surrounding the cancellation by the organizers, of a training organized for Jaffna based journalists, funded by the US government through Rights Now Collective for Democracy, which is registered under the Companies Act.
